Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is a comprehensive, cloud-based enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution designed for small and medium-sized businesses. It integrates various business processes, such as finance, sales, purchasing, inventory, project management, and operations, into a unified platform, enabling organizations to streamline workflows and improve efficiency. Key features include:
Dynamics 365 Business Central offers numerous benefits, including comprehensive financial management, real-time data access, and seamless integration with Microsoft products like Office 365 and Power BI. As a cloud-based solution, it provides flexibility and scalability to adapt to business growth, while its built-in CRM capabilities enhance customer relationship management. The platform leverages AI for insights and automation, improves reporting and analytics, and simplifies compliance management. Additionally, robust security features ensure the protection of sensitive data, making Business Central a powerful tool for streamlining operations and driving business success
The key differences between Microsoft Dynamics NAV and Dynamics 365 Business Central primarily revolve around deployment, functionality, and user experience.
Deployment Model: Dynamics NAV is traditionally an on-premises ERP solution, requiring significant infrastructure and maintenance, while Dynamics 365 Business Central is primarily a cloud-based solution, offering flexibility and accessibility from anywhere. Business Central can also be deployed on-premises if needed.
Functionality and Features: While both systems share core functionalities, Business Central enhances these with modern features such as AI-driven insights, advanced reporting capabilities, and seamless integration with other Microsoft products like Office 365 and Power BI. Business Central also operates on a subscription-based model, which can lead to lower total costs compared to NAV's upfront licensing and maintenance fees.
User Interface and Customization: Business Central features a more intuitive user interface designed for cloud use, utilizing the AL programming language for easier customization and management. In contrast, NAV uses the older C/AL language. This modern interface improves usability and productivity.
Updates and Maintenance: Business Central benefits from regular updates directly from Microsoft, ensuring users have access to the latest features and security enhancements without the need for extensive manual upgrades that are often required with NAV.
Dynamics 365 Business Central is licensed primarily through subscription models, offering flexibility for businesses of various sizes. There are three main types of licenses:
Licenses can only be purchased through Microsoft partners, and customers must have at least one Essentials or Premium license. The licensing model is designed to be straightforward, catering primarily to small and medium-sized businesses while allowing for scalability as organizational needs evolve.
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is available as both – an online SaaS ( cloud-based) solution, as well as for an on-premise deployment. Increasingly, however, a significantly higher percentage of customers are choosing the online solution, rather than going with an on-premise option. Some of the most powerful new features and functionalities are available only on the on-premise version. The advantages of an on-premise version have become too compelling in the last few years.
Dynamics 365 Business Central has several inbuilt reports and dashboards that are available and usable out-of-box. The solution also has several powerful features like simple-to-use filers and drill-downs that facilitate users to generate new reports and views. Dynamics 365 Business Central also integrates seamlessly with Power BI for more powerful and flexible reporting and dashboard creation. Power BI is a powerful Data visualization and Analytics tool that enables businesses to meet their reporting and Analytics needs.
The 1st question to address is – which data is right to migrate. While data like the Master Tables and Open Transactions are always moved to the new Dynamics 365 Business Central instance, discretion is to be applied when thinking about the historical/ transactional data. Very often, it’s not advisable to move the historical transactional data to a new ERP. This data is better placed in a data warehouse e.g. in a Microsoft Data Fabric instance. Whatever the final decision, the data that needs to be migrated to the new Business Central instance is uploaded by using simple data upload utilities. Ensuring Data Hygiene is always the responsibility of the business.
