Even though an increasing majority of customers take ‘online’ as the default deployment model, you do have other options. Your business and regulatory requirements, together with your infrastructure capacity and team skills will influence your decision.
The possible deployment models for Dynamics 365 are:
Going with the most commonly adopted deployment option of ‘Online’ means – you access the D365 applications via the cloud, without having to invest further on your IT infrastructure and software licensing. This model gives everyone in your organization the same experience with the software, across geographic locations and time zones. Dynamics 365 supports multiple browsers. Microsoft gives you Dev and Test environments, to facilitate your project execution and deployment. The Online deployment option comes with the tremendous benefits of – Microsoft taking daily backup of your database, and the system upgrades are seamlessly done by Microsoft.
An on-premise deployment gives you the full access control, and responsibility, of your data and systems. You would need to manage your backup processes, and you can decide whether you want an Internet Facing Deployment. Advantages of on-premise deployment include – the ability to generate custom SSRS reports, and having extensive customization capabilities. You must of course have your own hardware, and the needed system software. Solution upgrades will also have to be managed by you.
Some variations of the On-premise deployment can be partner hosted, or hybrid hosted models. If you have the CRM licenses for on-premise deployment, you may also have the option of asking your partner, or a 3rd party datacenter to host the solution for you. Based on their own skills, they may or may not provide you other services, like solution upgrade.
Business benefits from Microsoft Dynamics 365 solutions are squarely dependent on the quality of the solution implementation. Microsoft Dataflex Pro (formerly known as Common Data Service)
As the name suggests, Dataflex Pro is best understood as a database system that acts as a common repository of data coming from multiple applications. It can also be used by multiple apps running on top of it. While Microsoft Dynamics 365 applications like D365 Sales and D365 Customer Service use Dataflex Pro to store and secure the core application data, we can use Power Apps to build Apps on top of Dataflex Pro – without having a need for any integration effort. It’s a powerful built-in data platform. Dataflex Pro stores the data in Azure Data Lake storage, and comes with a management portal. Access to Dataflex Pro is free with Power Apps licenses. The data in Dataflex Pro can be viewed and analyzed with Power Platform services – Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate, etc. If we are building a mobile app – it usually brings together data that might belong to different applications. Usage of Dataflex Pro means – all data, from various applications, is on a common platform.
Dataflex Pro stores data within Entities. From a data view point, these Entities may be thought of as Tables. Dataflex Pro comes with a set of base entities, and we can add custom entities to it. Usage of Dataflex Pro enables us have a common shared data language used by business and analytical applications. It comprises of standardized, extensible data schemas published by Microsoft that enables consistency of data and its meaning across applications and business processes. Microsoft partners can extend these schemas with custom entities. This shared data language used by business and analytical applications, with extensible schemas, is called Microsoft Dataflex Pro.
Dataflex Pro stores, retrieves and controls data using a number of Azure services. These include
Azure SQL DB, SQL elastic pools used for relational data, Blob storage for the non-relational data, and CosmosDB for logs. At Ignite 2019 Microsoft presented the following architecture for Dataflex Pro.
Like other database systems, Dataflex Pro also requires a management tool to see entities, and manage them. The Power Apps portal can be used as Dataflex Pro management portal.

Besides your production environment, you will also have to provision separate environment for your Development & Testing environment.
The cloud instances of D365 work on the Microsoft cloud. While certain storage is allocated by default by Microsoft when an instance is set up, for customers needed additional storage, it is possible to buy this additional storage.
Your cloud data is stored on the Azure cloud, within the Microsoft Data Centers where your application instance has been provisioned. Based on the options selected at the time of provisioning, backup of the data may be stored at the same or other data centre locations.
